You Don\u2019t Even Have a Content Marketing Strategy<\/h2>\n<p>No, we are not going to count the <em>strategy<\/em> that you have in your head. It must be properly written and documented.<\/p>\n<p>You will be surprised to see that so many content marketers and digital businesses do not have a properly documented strategy.<\/p>\n<p>8% of B2C marketers are unsure of their strategy. 15% do not have one. It is fundamentally the movement of an organization from its present position to a desirable but inherently uncertain future position. The path from here to there is both analytical (a series of linked hypotheses about objectives in a market, where we do and don\u2019t play among our opportunity spaces, and what this means for customer value proposition, sales tasks, and other activities) and behavioral (the ongoing coordinated efforts of people who work in different functions but must align for effective strategy execution). And the trail always begins with customers.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. You Don\u2019t Know Your Target Audience<\/h2>\n<p>The entire purpose of content marketing is to reach out to your target audience and educate them about your niche, industry, and products or services.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you are preaching the wrong people about the wrong topic?<\/p>\n<p>No matter how good your content is, it will never be successful if it is not reaching the right group of people.<\/p>\n<p>Know your target audience and learn everything about them before you create your own content marketing strategy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who they are?<\/li>\n<li>What do they want?<\/li>\n<li>What are their deepest wishes and desires?<\/li>\n<li>What keeps them up till the middle of night?<\/li>\n<li>How can you, your content, and your products solve their problems and simplify their lives?<\/li>\n<li>What are they complaining about?<\/li>\n<li>How are the other products in your industry not serving them?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the HBR article says above, <em>\u201dthe trail always begins with the customer\u201d<\/em>, knowing your potential customer is the first step to success for your content marketing strategy.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Alignment of Content Strategy with Sales Funnel<\/h2>\n<p>Forget about your content strategy for a minute here.<\/p>\n<p>Your business must also have a sales funnel \u2014 which is an absolutely essential part of your online business.<\/p>\n<p>The content strategy \u2014 or simply speaking, the content you create on a regular basis \u2014 must align with that sales funnel.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, you\u2019d be trying two different things and none of them will work. Your content marketing strategy and the sales funnel of your business should work with each other.<\/p>\n<h2>4. No Lead Generation<\/h2>\n<p>If you are not generating leads via your content, you are simply wasting your time, efforts, and resources.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that there is no shortage of content on the web. However, there will be always some shortage of <em>good<\/em> content on the web.<\/p>\n<p>Exploit that gap, provide your blog readers with high-quality content, and convert them into leads.<\/p>\n<p>Take those readers to the next step by asking them to subscribe to your email list.
